The UAE made “no effort” to influence the 2016 elections in the United States, even while maintaining contact with representatives of the Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton presidential campaigns, according to Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Anwar Gargash.
In a tweet on Tuesday night, Gargash said that “attention needs to be paid to facts over innuendo and speculation; the UAE made no effort to influence the 2016 US election.”
“Like other governments friendly to the US, UAE officials had contact with staff and advisors in both 2016 presidential campaigns to inform and be informed of the candidates’ foreign policy,” he added.
Dr. Gargash’s statement comes following the leak of hacked e-mails from political consultants George Nader and Elliot Broidy, which purportedly show that they tried lobby Donald Trump and other American politicians to adopt policies favourable to the UAE and Saudi Arabia, as well as a recent New York.
